A journey from devotional panels to early modern design, revealing the materials, tools and decisions behind 120 works.
Craft Across Five Centuries follows the changing knowledge of makers, from late-medieval workshops to the arrival of industrial production. Rather than separating finished objects from their construction, the exhibition places methods and materials at the centre of the story.
Along the route
The galleries unfold in chronological order, beginning with painted altarpieces and concluding with early modernism. X-ray images uncover hidden joints, while a wall of historic pigments explains the value once attached to colour.
- More than 120 works, including many new to New York audiences
- A joinery room devoted to the structures beneath painted panels
