At the Table with Elena Marsh

Marcus Bell · November 17, 2026

Our lead curator reflects on a small ink study, a difficult installation and the habit every emerging artist should build.

Elena Marsh has guided Verdigris Row’s programme for six years. In a short studio conversation, she spoke about the object she returns to, the exhibition that tested the team and the advice she gives new artists.

A work she would not leave behind

Her choice is a postcard-sized ink study in the East Wing. Its modest dimensions are part of its force: a reminder that artists choose scale rather than submit to it.

The installation she still remembers

Craft Across Five Centuries arrived in three separate crates with three couriers. Coordinating those loans meant an unplanned night in the loading bay and some exceptionally careful timing.

What she tells artists starting out

Bring a work to completion, show it to someone with a demanding eye, listen closely, and begin again. Momentum grows from finished decisions.
