A simple practice from our artist in residence for slowing down, noticing more and remembering what the eye misses.
Twice a week, artist in residence David Okafor draws in the galleries before opening. The ritual has changed the way he approaches painting because it replaces a quick glance with sustained attention.
Stay past the first impression
Choose one work and give it three uninterrupted minutes. Begin at the boundaries, move toward the centre, then return to the edges. Details that seemed fixed often begin to shift.
Test your memory
Step away and sketch what remains in your mind. Accuracy is not the goal. The missing passages reveal where attention slipped, giving you a clear reason to look again.
Try it after hours
Draw After Dark uses the same approach in a welcoming monthly session. We provide the materials, and first-time participants are especially encouraged to join.
